Panama is like a big S laying on it's side. A ship entering the Canal in the morning from the Pacific Ocean would see the sunrise from the Gulf of Panama. That same ship traveling through the Canal all day and exiting to the Atlantic Ocean would see the sunset in the Caribbean Sea. All this is because the Canal runs NNW to SSE.
