Dec 12, 1901 Marconi sends transatlantic wireless message
1904 US takes over the construction of the Panama Canal and the “Canal Zone” is established.
1906 1st Canal Zone wireless station is established in Colon by the US Navy, callsign “SL”. A 2nd commercial station is established in Bocas del Toro by the United Fruit Company, callsign “B”
1907 Ships of the Panama Railroad Company are equipped with wireless radios.
1912 Radio Act of 1912 – requires all ships carrying passengers to be equipped with Wireless telegraph.
US begins licensing of Amateur Radio Operators
1913 3 Character callsigns are initiated
1917-1918 WWI No amateur radio activities
1927-1928 1st International Radiotelegraph Conference is held. Radio bands are established and callsign prefixes are assigned.
1931 Transition year from original callsigns to the new K5, NY1, NY2 callsigns
CZ callsigns are issued by the Department of Defense through the Army and Navy
1933 Begins SSB voice experiments
1942-1945 WWII No amateur radio activities
1946 Starts the new KZ5 callsigns
Oct 1949 Canal Zone Amateur Radio Association (CZARA) is established on the Pacific side
Nov 1949 Crossroads Amateur Radio Club (CARC) is established on the Atlantic side
Nov 1950 Amateur License Plates are authorized for cars
Feb 1952 The “Q R Mary’s ARC” is established for the YLs and XYLs just for the women.
Jul 1952 The use of an “N” after the callsign is established
Aug 1970 The CZ Government will assume the duties for exams and issuing Ham Licenses
Oct 1972 CZARA receives permission to install and operate an FM Repeater (KZ5FM)
September 30, 1979 KZ5 becomes a deleted entity
